Research series on Mainland China's economic issues

In October 1997, the Himalaya Foundation entrusted Professor YU Tzong-Shian, Director of the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research and Researcher at the Academia Sinica, to head a research project exploring economic issues facing Mainland China. This research project focused on China's state-owned enterprises, the financial system, the accounting system, the agricultural economy and the uneven development of China's regions.

Research on the Asian Economic Crisis

In 1998, the Himalaya Foundation entrusted Professor Yu Tzong-Shian with a research project on the Asian Economic Crisis of 1997. For this project, scholars from Japan, Korea, China and other Southeastern countries analyzed the impact of the crisis on the economy of their respective countries. Their research findings were published in Chinese and English under the title From Crisis to Recovery: East Asia Rising Again.

Translation of Eco-Efficiency: The Business Link to Sustainable Development

Eco-efficiency is the best method used by companies who pursue sustainable development while still remaining competitive. It is also an important concept for preserving our environment. In order to allow local business to better understand the concept of eco-efficiency, the Himalaya Foundation translated in Chinese the guide Eco-Efficiency: The Business Link to Sustainable Development, originally published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Symposium on Cross-Strait Cooperation in Finance Sponsored by the Taipei Foundation of Finance 

The Taipei Foundation of Finance hosts annual symposia on cross-strait financial issues at universities in Mainland China and Taiwan. The symposia have been held alternately in China and Taiwan for the last five years. Himalaya Foundation has been one of the sponsors of this yearly event.

Boston University Institute for the Study of Economic Culture
"Two Research Projects in Social Science"

The Institute for the Study of Economic Culture at Boston University was founded in 1985 with the purpose of studying the relation between culture and socio-economic changes. The Himalaya Foundation supported two important research projects of the Institute, "Cultural Globalization," which is a multi-country comparative study on the relationship between culture and globalization, and "Between Family and State: Social Capital and Social Change in Three Chinese Societies," which is a study of the contribution of civil society institutions to social change in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Harvard University Asia Center
"Asia Vision 21 Conference"

Asia Vision 21 is an annual research and conference project started in 1999 by the Asia Center of Harvard University. It is designed to be a forum where experts and leaders from Asia and America in fields such as business and politics meet to discuss pressing issues in the region with the purpose of building relationships between Asian and American leaders and policy-makers. The Himalaya Foundation began its involvement in this project by supporting the second conference held in Hong Kong on May 18-20, 2000. This forum examined the situation in the Asian region after the Asian Financial Crisis by focusing on economic, political, security and social issues. The Himalaya Foundation also supported the third Asia Vision 21 Conference entitled "Managing Globalization" that took place in Cambridge, Massachusetts on May 11-12, 2001. The conference focused on the impact of globalization in Asia by examining the challenges it brings to business and its influence on government and governance. Particular attention was also given to the increased role of Asian NGOs in the region and the importance of higher education and training in the field of science and technology as means to face the challenges of globalization.

"China's Internationalization: Internal Frontiers and Global Dimensions"

In this series of conferences partially supported by the Himalaya Foundation and organized by the Asia Center with the collaboration of the Sinology Institute of the Free University of Berlin, the aim is to examine the interactions, the inter-penetrations, cooperation and the tensions that are generated by the incorporation and the participation of China into global systems. A comprehensive and multi-disciplinary approach is used to study China's foreign relations.
